The Friends of the Gaston Livery Stable saw the need to save one of the oldest all brick barns in the state of South Carolina, the Gaston Livery Stable.

Built in 1893, this barn is the only one remaining in South Carolina with a carriage lift. It is possibly the only brick U-Shaped barn with a carriage lift in the United States. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the property was an integral element in the Equine and Winter Colony history of Aiken.

The Gaston Livery Stable 'Barn' was in danger of being demolished either by neglect or by an owner who would not appreciate the significance of this property, hence the need to try to prevent this destruction.

The barn is now protected from demolition and neglect. On October 22, 2012, the Gaston Livery Stable designated as an historical landmark in Aiken!

As of it's designation, most all of the intensive labor was donated from the private sector of our community. No public funds or taxpayers monies have been involved in this project. Nor does the board anticipate using money other than donations from our generous patrons!

Once the barn has been restored, plans include using the Barn as a self-sustaining living history park and museum operated under the direction of the Friends of the Gaston Livery Stable and the Aiken County Historical Museum.
